Pygmy Bitterroot [Lewisia pygmaea]

First collected for science on the Lewis and Clark Expedition in Montana in 1806. The fleshy carrot-shaped root is edible, but the outer skin is very bitter. Found in stony soils in subalpine meadows to sparsely-vegetated areas in alpine zones.
