11 Oct 2009: Colorado and Utah [photos from 1-7 Oct 2009] Photos from Colorado National Monument, near Grand Junction, CO, and Capitol Reef National Park and the San Rafael Swell area in west-central Utah. Colorado National Monument Established on May 24, 1911, the Monument covers about 83 sq km [32 sq mi] of territory southwest of the city of Grand Junction in western Colorado. This arid land high on the Colorado Plateau features pinion pine and juniper forests dotting sandstone and granite–gneiss–schist rock formations cut by stunning canyons. San Rafael Swell The San Rafael Swell lies within Emery County, Utah, and is a 121 km [75 mi] by 64 km [40 mi] dome-shaped anticline of sandstone, shale, and limestone on the Colorado Plateau. The area is bisected by Interstate Route 70. Since its formation, the Swell has been exposed to powerful flash floods that have eroded the land into innumerable valleys, canyons, mesas, and buttes. |
