1 Jan 2009: Winter on the east coast of the Izu peninsula, Shizuoka, Japan [photos 29 Dec 2008]

The forms of life left over from the furious pace of Izu's Summer growth remain behind. Those not blown away on the winter wind will soon enough be covered by new growth in Spring.

For now, you can see things that are hidden by the luxuriant foliage most of the year. Rock formations, tree trunks draped with crazily twisted vines. And without the blanketing effect of the summer humidity, long vistas up the coast are clear, with deep blue water and dark gray rocks connected by the brilliant white foam and spray of the crashing waves.

On a fair day with no wind, it's great to walk along the coast, the morning chill quickly smoothed out by the sun on the rocks and the water. Down to shirtsleeves, especially if you keep moving and are carrying a few pounds of camera gear, a couple of "onigiri" rice balls, and a bottle of water.

Even though it is Winter, there are still flowers blooming in protected spots - you can even see butterflies and other insects energized by the mild temperatures and sunshine. And - it is the season for "mikan" - the juicy little oranges whose skins come off in one piece with a scoop of the thumb - truly a lazy man’s meal. Natural fast food. お蜜柑の段々畑を取得したい!

Still, I am looking forward to March, when another sub-tropical explosion of life brings out the shoots and buds.
